Location

Stockbridge/Comely Bank is a wonderfully vibrant place during the day and night with plenty to do and see. The photos below are from what is on the doorstep.

It is also within walking distance to the centre of town, the main thoroughfare of Princes Street with splendid views of Edinburgh Castle.

To get to the West End of Princes Street head up Comely Bank Avenue, veer left across the elegant Dean Bridge and then  continue straight ahead – it takes about 15 mins. A major new tourist attraction at the West End is the Johnnie Walker Whisky experience which is taking up eight floors, with roof top bar and visitor centre. It opens in the summer of 2021.

To get to the centre of Princes Street wander along Raeburn Place through Stockbridge and over the bridge at Deanhaugh Street (Pizza Express on the other side of the street!). Keep to the main street heading up Kerr street onto North West Circus place and you will soon come to Howe street. From there it is a straight climb ahead through the impressive New Town. You will cross Heriot Row, Queen Street and George Street then onto Princes Street. It takes about 20-25 mins. At the East End of Princes Street there is an exciting new shopping centre opening in June 2021 called the St James Quarter.

In terms of parking. The flat is in controlled  zone N3 and has residents parking permit and on street metered parking. Between 5.30pm and 8.30am  weekdays you are able to park in either residents parking spots or elsewhere on the streets free of charge. Outwith these times you would have to pay for parking if in the N3 zone. You can park outwith the N3 zone free of charge (that’s what I do) as it’s only a 10 min walk back to the flat. You pay for parking by downloading the Ringo app which is on android and apple devices or feeding a meter. Parking costs £2.70 per hour. At weekends there are no restrictions or charges to park in the N3 zone at anytime. I can give tips on the best places and times to park  outwith the N3 zone.

Cafes/Bars/Shops

There is a wonderful choice of artisan bakers, cheesemongers, bars/restaurants and individul boutique shops close at hand- too many to highlight but a few favourites are below. For eating out we recommend the Scran and Scallie (offers gastropub food and is owned by renowned Scottish Chef Tom Kitchin), also Rollo which is opposite it.

Favourites

Thought it would be a nice idea to capture some of the less obvious favourite things that ourselves and guests have particularly enjoyed in Stockbridge/Comely Bank.

Stockbridge Market (Sunday from 10.00am). Just beyond Deanhaugh Street.

A leisurely walk along the pretty Circus Lane and a drink in the St Vincent Bar.  Click here to read about Circus Lane.

A stroll along Ann Street which was until recently the most expensive street in Edinburgh and was loved by the Royals. Click here to read about it.

A walk along the Water of Leith (enter by steps at Pizza Express at Deanhaugh Street) and the Stockbridge Colonies.

A walk to the Dean Village. Start from St Bernard’s Bridge which is just down from Dean Terrace. Read about the history of the Dean Village here.

Enjoy a weekly beer/wine tasting evening in Apellation Wines (on the corner!)
